In 2002 Kent Precision Foods Group, Inc. quickly began working on expanding the Thick-It® brand to include more mealtime options for people with swallowing difficulties. In 2005, an innovative, ready-to-use line of puréed comfort foods was developed. These nutritious, convenient, great-tasting foods made with real ingredients helped to change the way dysphagia sufferers viewed thickened food options.
Also during 2005, a scientist named Doug Stetzer was frustrated when his grandmother who had been diagnosed with dysphagia, became dehydrated after she refused to drink the starch-based- dysphagia products being provided. Stetzer was determined to develop a clear, natural tasting thickened water that his grandmother would drink. He conducted research and experimented with many ingredients, which in 2008 lead him to develop a xanthan gum-based, ready-to-drink thickened water that is now part of a line of beverages known as Thick-It® AquaCareH20 Beverages. The first clear, ready-to-drink dysphagia thickening product on the market allows consumers to use it as a water substitute in virtually any puréed food or drink recipe, including milk and hot cocoa. The line was later expanded to include thickened juices and the only ready-to-drink thickened coffee on the market.
