Are Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages safe for PKU?

Yes, there is no added phenylalanine in any of the Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages.


What is xanthan gum?

Xanthan gum is a stabilizer used in a variety of foods, such as salad dressings and ice cream, to prevent ingredients from separating.


Do Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages mix well with powdered drink mixes? If so, how do I mix properly?

Yes, Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages mix well with powdered drink mixes. Simply follow the directions on the package of the powdered mix, substituting Thick-It AquaCareH2O thickened water for naturally occurring water. Find some of our favorites here.


Can I heat Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages?

Yes, Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages can be heated in the microwave or on the stovetop. (Heating the water first is recommended before adding powdered drink mixes such as cocoa powder, instant tea or instant soup mix.)

Microwave directions: Pour 6 fl oz into a microwavable mug and heat in the microwave on high for 45 seconds or until desired temperature, not to exceed 180 degrees, test with thermometer.

Stovetop directions: Pour desired amount into a pan and heat until desired temperature, not to exceed 180 degrees, test with thermometer.

Caution: Contents will be hot. 
Do not to overheat coffee as some dysphagia patients may have reduced sensory reception and burning of mucosa could result.


How do I heat Thick-It AquaCareH2O Coffee?

Add powdered creamer, sugar or sweetener as desired, stir before serving. Up to 1 1/8 teaspoon of milk or liquid creamer can be added to 6 fl oz of coffee and it will remain within the acceptable viscosity range.


Can Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages be frozen?

Yes, Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages can be frozen and will remain the appropriate consistency when they melt. Enjoy ice cubes, popsicles and slushies again!


How do I properly store Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages?

Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages should be stored in a cool, dry area. Once opened, it should be stored in the refrigerator.


What flavors and consistencies are available?

Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages come in the following flavors: water, coffee, both regular and decaffeinated, apple juice, orange juice and cranberry juice. All are available in nectar and honey consistencies.


Are Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages gluten free?

Are Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages Kosher and Kosher for Passover?

Yes, Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages are Kosher and the ONLY thickened beverages available that are Kosher for Passover.


What makes Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water clear?

Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages are made with Artesian mineral water from a 600 ft. well located in Superior, WI and thickened using a patented-process with xanthan gum, a thickening agent that creates a clear, thickened beverage.


Does Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water have a lemon flavor?

No, Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water does not contain any lemon flavoring, typically used as a masking agent. However, if you or your loved one prefers and enjoys lemon-flavored water, it is safe to add a small squeeze of lemon juice or lemon in the Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water.


What sizes are available?

Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages come in 46 oz re-sealable bottles (4/case) as well as small, travel-size 8 oz re-sealable bottles (24/case) that are perfect for on the go.


I’m a healthcare professional and I’d like to use Thick-It AquaCareH2O in my facility. How do I purchase it?

Do Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages have a HCPCs code for reimbursement?

No, currently there is not a HCPCs code for Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages or for any pre-thickened product. But this does not necessarily mean they will not be reimbursed; contact your private insurers, State Medicaid or Medicare for exceptions and specific information. Do you make a milk variety?

We currently do not make a milk variety at this time. If milk is desired, powdered milk can be added to our Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water for a great-tasting, thickened milk. Simply follow the directions on the box of powdered milk, substituting Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water for naturally occurring water.


Can you add liquid to Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages, like other liquid beverages, dairy creamers?

Up to 1 1/8 teaspoon of liquid is generally safe to add to 6 fl oz of Thick-It AquacareH2O Beverages and will not significantly affect viscosity. Larger amounts of liquids should not be added to as the viscosity could change resulting in the beverage being too thin and therefore unsafe for those with swallowing disorders to consume.


Do I need a prescription to purchase Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages?

No, you do not need a prescription. Visit our Where to Buy page for details on where you can purchase Thick-It products. Although a prescription is not needed, we recommend you consult with a medical professional to determine the appropriate consistency to purchase.


Where is the expiration date located on the bottle, and how do I read it?

The expiration date is located on the top of the lid and is the last 6 digits of the code. For example 041516 would mean the product expires April 15, 2016.

Are Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages safe for children?

Thick-It AquaCareH2O apple, orange and cranberry juices are good options for children over a year old. Thick-It AquaCareH2O Water mixed with flavored drink powder, lemonade powder or powdered supplements provides variety. Freezing into popsicles is also a good, fun way to get fluids. Thick-It AquacareH2O Water can also be used to make gelatin when using the quick set method. Per the American Academy of Pediatrics, no thickeners, INCLUDING Thick-It® Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners, are appropriate for use with premature infants (born before 37 weeks gestation). We recommend you consult with your Physician before Thick-It products with any infant.


How can Thick-It AquaCareH2O Beverages fit into a diabetic diet?

The water and coffee varieties are sugar, calorie and carbohydrate free, while the juices contain no added sugars or high fructose corn syrup. Although the juices do contain calories and carbohydrates, they can be added to any person’s meal plan. Consult with your registered dietitian or healthcare provider. How do I read the code on the side of the case and/or on the bottom of the can?

Each can should have a code on the bottom of the can that helps Kent Precision Foods Group, Inc. ensure proper identification of the product. An example is below:

You purchased a can of Chicken a’ la King Puree and on the bottom of the can, it reads:
003 2502/1478 PJ
P-217
003: Batch code
250: Julian date; in this example the 250th day of the year
2: Year (last digit) in this example 201(2)
1478: Can number
PJ: Product code
EST: Establishment Number – (P-217 = Poultry)

Therefore, this can of Chicken a’ la King Puree was manufactured on September 6, 2012 and will expire two years from this date (September 6, 2014).


How long do Thick-It Purees remain safe after opening?

Store leftover Thick-It Purees in an airtight container for 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator. Or you can freeze leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 weeks.

Do I have to cook Thick-It Purees?

Thick-It Purees are fully cooked in the can and sterilized in the canning process so they do not have to be cooked prior to consumption.

Stovetop: Heat contents over medium heat until warm; stir occasionally.

Microwave: Spoon contents into microwave-safe container and cover.
Microwave on High for 30 to 60 seconds or until warm. Stir before serving.
Microwave ovens vary; cooking time may need to be adjusted.

CAUTION: Container and contents may be hot; use pot holders when removing from microwave.


Are Thick-It Purees Kosher?

No, Thick-It Purees are not Kosher.


Can Thick-It Purees be frozen?

Yes, you may freeze unused portions of the Thick-It Purees in a freezer-safe container.


What is the shelf-life of Thick-It Purees?

For optimum quality performance, we recommend consuming Thick-It Purees within two years from the date of manufacture.


What are the diabetic exchanges for Thick-It Purees?

Why would a person need to eat pureed foods?

Thick-It Purees are for people with dysphagia and swallowing disorders. They are also for people who cannot chew or have digestion issues. Thick-It Purees are also great for people recovering from Bariatric procedures.


Do Thick-It Purees contain food allergens?

Our labels are clearly marked if they contain any of the major food allergens.

Are Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners safe to use with infants?

Per the American Academy of Pediatrics, no thickeners, INCLUDING Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners, are appropriate for use with premature infants (born before 37 weeks gestation). We recommend you consult with your Physician before Thick-It products with any infant.


Can Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners be used with powdered laxatives and colonoscopy preparations?

Both starch and the fiber in colonoscopy preparations compete for the retention of water.  When you add the starch to the colonoscopy preparation, you actually will see thinning of the product. Therefore it would not be safe for individuals with dysphagia to consume.

We recommend using Thick-It AquaCareH2O Thickened Water with the powdered colonoscopy preps.


Can Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners be mixed with dyes or other materials in preparation for medical tests and/ or procedures? Can it be used with medication?

Consult with your physician before mixing Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners with any preparation testing materials.


Could Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners cause or add to an existing constipation problem?

Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners do not bind fluids. Constipation is generally caused by other circumstances such as medications, lack of daily dietary fiber, poor eating habits, lack of exercise and inadequate consumption of liquids.


Do Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners cause diarrhea?

Not usually, but everyone is different. Consult your physician.


Can Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners be mixed with carbonated beverages?

Yes. To thicken carbonated beverages, measure the appropriate amount of Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickener and pour it into a glass. Add the carbonated beverage to the Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickener and mix until dissolved.


Will continued use of Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickener cause dehydration?

No, Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners do not bind fluids. The person receives essentially the same hydration as if they had consumed a non-thickened fluid. In other words, 93% of the liquid is directly absorbed for hydration. It is also important for the person to receive a significant liquid intake on a daily basis, unless a physician has advised the person to limit fluids.


Can Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners be mixed in advance in bulk?

Yes, you can mix Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners in bulk as long as you keep the unused portion covered and refrigerated. The unused refrigerated portion may be kept for 2-3 days. Do not leave a thickened liquid at room temperature any longer than 3-4 hours as bacteria may build up.


How much Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickener can be consumed in a 24-hour period?

There is no maximum recommended quantity. It is important to keep hydrated, which means drinking as much liquid as possible, unless a physician has advised the person to limit fluids.


Are Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickeners gluten free?

Yes, the ingredients in Thick-It Original (modified food starch and maltodextrin) and Thick-It 2 Concentrated (modified cornstarch) are derived from corn; therefore, they do not contain any rye, wheat or barley.

How long will the liquid remain thick after it has been mixed with Thick-It Instant Food and Beverage Thickener?

What is modified food starch?

Modified is the method used to process the starch so that it easily dissolves in a cold or hot liquid without having to boil the liquid first.


What is maltodextrin?

Maltodextrin is an easily digestible carbohydrate and is used in a wide variety of dry foods, dairy products, meats and beverages.
